As chiropractic becomes more mainstream, there is an influx of patients who are looking to see a chiropractor for the first time. To many people, what chiropractors actually do in office can be a mystery. Some have heard the stories of “getting their back and neck cracked”, but what does that actually mean. For many years, the main chiropractic treatment was spinal manipulation, or an adjustment. The idea was that chiropractors would feel along the spine, or take x-rays to find areas that were out of place. They would then perform a quick, but gentle thrust to anywhere along the spine, including the low back, mid back and neck, to readjust the area out of alignment. As time has passed, and chiropractic education has continued to change, there has been a slight change in treatment philosophy. Chiropractors are receiving more education in the form of different treatment methods. Today a good chiropractic appointment will include the a thorough exam prior to any treatment. During this exam, the chiropractor will determine what is causing your pain. Spine pain can can be mechanical, due to muscle imbalances from poor posture, or overuse, or it can be derived from the nerve irritation from a disc bulge. Once the cause of pain has been determined, a proper course of treatment including, deep tissue muscle release, stretching, exercises, and a chiropractic manipulation should be performed. Chiropractors are now borrowing treatment philosophies from physical therapist, and other health care professionals. We now understand that a chiropractic manipulation is only one piece to the puzzle. We must also include other treatment methods to help reduce and relieve pain for good.
